Carnival Setting Sail to Cuba

By Matt Swenson, June 8, 2015

Carnival Cruise Line became the latest to get on board the Cuba bandwagon this week, announcing it has received permission from the United States government to add the formerly forbidden island to its itinerary next year. The Cuban government has not yet given the official go-ahead, but should Carnival receive clear passage, its packages will be seven-day trips starting at $2,990 per person.

Because the U.S. has not given the OK for leisure travel to Cuba—there are 12 categories a trip must fall into, including meetings, business travel and mission work—the cruise line says it will incorporate social responsibility and cultural education into its voyages. The trips will focus on “cultural, artistic, faith-based and humanitarian exchanges between American and Cuban citizens,” the company said in a statement. As a result, onboard casinos are being tossed overboard—until the island is fully open to the American public.
