Earlier this year, advocacy coalition Meetings Mean Business helped organize North American Meetings Industry Day to illustrate the impact events have on the economy. Next year, the group has set its sights higher, expanding and rebranding the initiative to create the first-ever Global Meetings Industry Day.
The goal is through a series of meetings, social media outreach and other events, the industry will unite on April 14, 2016, to demonstrate the impact of business meetings, incentive travel, conferences, conventions, trade shows and other events.
“The growth and success of our industry are critical to the world’s economy, and we look forward to communicating our value on the global stage,” says David Peckinpaugh, MMB co-chair and president of Maritz Travel.
In April 2015, North American Meetings Industry Day included more than 88 events in the United States, Canada, Mexico and parts of Latin America, as well as virtual workshops put on by American Express Meetings & Events. Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, now a Republican presidential candidate, and the mayors of Toronto, Washington, D.C., and Buffalo, New York, issued proclamations of support of meetings.
The larger event is a reflection of the move to a global economy, with international companies bringing workers together in one location for teambuilding activities and to improve communication and set goals for improved production.
