Luxury Hotel The Westin Jackson is Officially Open

The state of Mississippi, considered by some to be the birthplace of American music, pulses with authenticity: the strains of R&B, gospel and jazz, history, architecture and quintessential Southern culture. Over the last few years, ubiquitous construction cranes in downtown Jackson, the state’s capital, have brought revitalization to a historic city. Among the additions are two new museums—the Museum of Mississippi History and the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum—as well as several new hotels. Chief among them is The Westin Jackson, a 203-room luxury hotel that opened Aug. 3.

On-site, planners will find 12,000 square feet of meeting space including two ballrooms, a spa and an indoor pool. There’s also Estelle, a modern wine bar and bistro. The high-end property is making quite a splash, as it’s the first of its kind not only in Jackson, but the first Westin in the state as well.

“This area has definitely needed an upscale luxury hotel,” says Jan Smith, director of sales and marketing for Westin Jackson. “It’s long overdue.”

Another benefit for guests will be the Westin’s proximity to Jackson’s hot spots, says Smith. Museums, galleries, the Mississippi Freedom Trail, restaurants, clubs and festivals, as well as the Jackson Convention Complex, are all within walking distance of the hotel.

Food Driven

Matthew Kajdan, executive chef at Estelle, will showcase local products like honey, dairy and red fish on what he describes as a contemporary American menu with regional and European influences. Estelle will also serve Sunday brunch, with items like chicken and waffles or sweet potato pancakes. Thirsty guests can sip on local brews and spirits like Cathead Vodka, the oldest distillery in Mississippi. “We’re going to be the nicest hotel in the state of Mississippi,” promises Kajdan, “and we’ll continue that trend with our food.”
